Room best film pick in Vancouver

The captivity drama Room and the coming-of-age tale Sleeping Giant were the big winners at an awards bash hosted Wednesday by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle. Room won Best Canadian Film and Best Actress honours went to U.S. star Brie Larson. Best Actor went to 9-year-old Vancouver resident Jacob Tremblay.

Room also won Best Screenplay for Irish-Canadian writer Emma Donoghue.

Andrew Cividino of Dundas, Ont., was named Best Director of a Canadian Film for his debut feature Sleeping Giant, also named Best First Film. Its star, Nick Serino, won Best Supporting Actor. Best Supporting Actress went to Tara Pratt of No Men Beyond This Point.
