Sweat lodge
Cities house more than 50 per cent of Canadian indigenous people, but the rooftop sweat lodge at Yonge and College Sts. stands alone. “Can’t say I’ve heard of one anywhere else in the world,” says Kelly Hashemi of Native Child and Family Services. The lodge, atop the service’s 30 College St. building, hosts traditional ceremonies almost every week, including some open to the general public. It’s vital for indigenous people who seldom leave the concrete jungle to connect with the land, Hashemi said.
