Toronto police sergeant charged with assault
Charges follow incident in a Scarborough parking lot that sent man to hospital
For the second time in less than a week, a Toronto police sergeant has been charged with assault.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has charged Toronto Police Sgt. Robert Goudie with one count of assault causing bodily harm following an alleged early morning assault on a man in a Scarborough parking lot near Danforth Rd. and Midland Ave.
According to the SIU, the charges stem from an incident on Oct. 31, 2015.
The civilian watchdog says that shortly after 4 a.m., an unnamed 47year-old man drove into the parking lot at 10 Gordonridge Place.
Just moments later, a police cruiser followed the car into the parking lot and came to a stop behind it.
There was an “interaction” between the man and the officer, and the officer left the scene.
“Sometime later,” paramedics took the man to Scarborough General Hospital, the SIU said in a release Thursday.
The SIU has not provided any further information about the incident. The agency’s probe included a review of video evidence and 911 call recordings.
Goudie has also been charged with one count of failure to provide the necessaries of life in connection to the incident.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 23, 2016. Toronto police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray confirmed that Goudie, who works out of Scarborough’s 41Division, has been suspended with pay.
Last Friday, the SIU announced To- ronto Police Sgt. Darren Worth has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm. That charge stems from a July 5, 2015 incident when several officers attempted to arrest four men seen entering a vehicle in a parking lot near Bathurst and Dundas Sts.
Doctors later determined the 24year-old driver of the vehicle had sustained a fractured right orbital bone during the arrest. With files from Stephanie Werner
