Honest daycare debate needed
Re Child-care dream fades under a ‘feminist’ PM, Opinion March 11 As with your recent editorial on the same topic, columnist Carol Goar extols government-subsidized (and, no doubt, unionized) daycare while failing to cite the problems associated with Quebec’s experience — soaring costs, long waiting lists, under-representation for those in need, etc.
As for the categorization of this solution as “affordable,” I would ask in what context? Witness the state of health care in this country, which many perceive to be “low-cost” or, even worse, “free,” when it is anything but.
Advocates for state-subsidized daycare claim we can’t afford not to implement it. I say let’s at least have an honest debate on the subject and stop ignoring the empirical evidence in our own backyard. Jeff Barker, Mississauga
