TIMELINE: THE DAY OF THE DANZIG SHOOTING
July 16
10:46 a.m.: A tweet from @2ToneShorty account, believed to be Nahom Tsegazab’s, is sent out: “#HennessyBlockParty. Today at 6 oclock! We got some hot djs comin thru 30 bottles sittin on ice. And a whole lotta food on the grill.” The account had tweeted nearly 30 similar invitations in the week leading up to the party.
11:20 a.m.: A Twitter user with the handle @Sha_Hustle wrote: “if theres problems at the #blocko i know nuff places we can leave bodies just by some garbage bags.”
2 p.m.: Crowds begin to gather for the party and barbecue. Shannon Longshaw later identified herself as an organizer, saying it was meant to be a barbecue for neighbourhood kids that was hijacked by the Hennessy-drinking crowd.
7 p.m.: The Hennessy-drinking crowd grows. The music blares.
8 p.m.: The party picks up steam and spills over into a nearby parking lot. Jaguars and Hummers are parked around the block and estimates that up to 300 people are crammed into the complex as a DJ starts spinning and shouting out local rappers. Bicycle police visit the scene after multiple noise complaints are called in. The music is turned down and the party continues.
Around 10:30 p.m.: A fight erupts and gunmen start firing a hail of bullets through the crowd, killing Shyanne Charles, 14, and Joshua Yasay, 23, and injuring 23 people.
10:40 p.m.: The first 911 calls come in. Police from nearby 43 Division said officers arrive “two minutes” later, according to reports at the time.
10:43 p.m.: Paramedics arrive on the
scene. July 17 1:05 a.m.: Shots are fired at a home on Whiteleas Ave., 10 km from the Danzig scene. No one was injured.
