Kerry and Alexander

-

Kerry is a 32-year-old “medical professional” who lives at Yonge and Eglinton. She says, “I wear scrubs all day! Outside of work, I still like to be comfy: the leggings, sweaters, boots kind of deal.” Kerry is “smart, fun and witty”; she likes to “dance, watch movies and TV, work out, travel and hang out with my nieces and nephews.” Kerry says her love life consists of “a lot of first dates! It’s been years since I was in a relationship. I feel like I’m perpetually single.” Kerry says, “I’m looking for a partner in crime. Someone who can make me laugh — because I’ll certainly make him laugh! I’m looking for that ‘best friend’ connection.”

I met Alexander on a random dating site. He had just moved to Toronto. His pics were cute, and we seemed to have a good conversation, a good vibe. We met at my usual “date Starbucks.” I like coffee dates, especially for online dates, since there isn’t a lot of pressure. You can make it super quick if there’s no connection, or it can last for hours, until you get kicked out at the end of the night. That happened to me once.

Alexander was late to meet me because of traffic, and having no idea where he was going, or how to navigate the city. However, all was forgiven after he showed up. Cute.

Coffee was uneventful. The vibe was fine. I definitely felt a connection of some kind, but to be honest, it was probably mostly physical. The conversation was fine, too, but he seemed to have trouble focusing. That, or we didn’t have much to say to each other.

As we were wrapping it up — or so I thought — Alexander suggested going to a movie. I’m not exactly the spontaneous type, but I decided to go along with it, just to see what would happened. He was super cute, after all. Luckily, we decided on a movie that was starting about an hour later.

We got to the movie theatre without incident and with time to spare. However, before we went in, he suggested we buy some snacks. I told him that we could buy snacks at the theatre. Popcorn is the best part! He told me he liked to be healthy. I tried not to roll my eyes.

We walked to a market nearby. He started to look around the produce section, eventually choosing some fruit. He then went to the bulk-food section and looked at a giant container of walnuts. I told him he couldn’t bring nuts as a snack to the movies. He started looking at the figs instead.

At this point, I was following him while he aimlessly wandered around — I still found him cute, but the “connection” had waned. We finally ended up in the cracker section, which was a relief, as those are closer to a normal person’s movie snacks. Alexander started reading the calories on the packages. Counting calories is definitely a turn off! I was thinking, “Dude, hold back on the food weirdness until at least the third date.” As he lined up to pay, I started praying that we would miss the beginning of the movie and I could leave.

It didn’t happen. The movie was terrible, the theatre was freezing and Alexander tried to feed me health crackers the entire time. No, thank you. When we left the theatre, I looked at him to say goodbye. The night was still young, and I was ready to do something else. Alexander clearly thought it was a great opportunity to grab my head and try to make out with me. It wasn’t totally bad, but it was so awkward. It’s not like I had given him signals! I said something like, “Drive safely!” but I guess I didn’t leave fast enough because he started making out with me again.

After the date, I felt bad and actually thought I needed to be more open and less picky. I agreed to see him again. However, he refused to go to dinner with me, and only wanted to see movies, or come over to my place. The second date didn’t happen.
