LESSER-KNOWN TERROR ATTACKS

- JONATHAN KEALING GLOBALPOST

The Brussels terrorist attacks are the most violent to hit Europe since the attacks in Paris that killed 130 people last November. But this is not the first, or even the second, terrorist attack in that time. Since Nov. 13, there have been literally hundreds of terrorist attacks around the world. Some were well-reported, but many more flew under the radar. Here are some of the most significant terrorist attacks you may have missed. Nov. 20, 2015 — Mali A group of Al Qaeda-linked militants take 170 people hostage, ultimately killing 20, during a mass shooting at a Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako, the capital of Mali in West Africa. Malian commandos ultimately raid the hotel and free the hostages, killing the two assailants. Another seven people are wounded. Jan. 12, 2016 — Turkey A suicide bombing in a popular central square in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, leaves 13 people dead and 14 injured. Jan. 14 — Indonesia A series of suicide bombings and shootings in Indonesia’s capital leaves eight people dead, including four assailants. Another 24 people are wounded. Feb. 17 — Turkey Kurdish freedom fighters attack a convoy of buses in Ankara, the capital, killing military personnel and civilians during evening rush hour. At least 29 people die and another 60 people are injured. March 13 — Ivory Coast At least 18 people are killed and another 33 injured when an Al Qaeda-linked group attack the Étoile du Sud hotel, which is popular with expats in Ivory Coast. Among the deceased are 15 civilians and three special forces soldiers.
