SUPER CANUCKS

-

For years, the CW has been finding its all-American heroes and villains in Canada. Here are five Canadian crossovers in TV’s comic book world: Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen/Arrow on Arrow): The 34-year-old Toronto native will soon star as Casey Jones in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. His cousin Robbie Amell, 27, can be seen on the CW’s The Tomorrow People as well as The Flash (as Ronnie Raymond/Firestorm/Deathstorm). Robbie is also engaged in real life to his Supergirl, Canadian Italia Ricci. Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein/Fire

storm): After 40 years of success on Broadway and in feature films, the 67year-old London, Ont., native is as surprised as anyone to be a superhero. “Who would have thought that I would be in this position at this time of my life? I thought I’d be a lawyer on The Good Wife.” Tom Cavanagh (Dr. Harrison Wells/ Reverse-Flash): “It’s fun,” says the 52-

year-old Ottawa native. “Oftentimes, as actors, you go up pretending with a capital P.” That’s just heightened on a show about a comic book hero, he says. Laura Vandervoort (Indigo/Brainiac 8 on Supergirl): Before headlining Bitten, the Toronto native played Supergirl on the CW series Smallville. While her Supergirl stint was brief, executive producer Ali Adler told reporters in January that “We’re just so excited to have her here on these stages.” Henry Czerny (Winslow Schott, Sr./

Toyman in Supergirl): Like Garber, the 57-year-old Toronto native is better known for stage and screen roles at Stratford and beyond. Berlanti says actors with theatrical backgrounds make the best villains. “We see it in a lot of people we cast who come from musicals,” he says. “It’s perfect for the comic book tone where it both feels real and heightened at the same time.”
