Re Quebec to pay $50K of cost for René Angélil’s

funeral, April 1 Madness — $700,000 for a funeral, “roughly 10 times the amount such events cost.” Was charging admission ever considered to alleviate such a whopping expenditure?

The sincere, humorous obituary on the same day of Angus MacDonald, a true Scot (“The devil finally called my name: self-penned obituary goes viral”), was right on the money. “A funeral is a waste of harrrrrrd earned and harrrrrrd saved money that my family can use now.” The man had common sense.

I’ve had to count pennies all my life. Like Mr. MacDonald, when I ship out for good, it will be with the local “great cremator” and hopefully my lovely wife will get Air Miles for the money spent.

My only request: I want the Weavers’ 1950s song, “So Long, It’s Been Good to Know Yuh,” played as loud as possible.

Then I will die frugally, and in peace. Garry Burke, Oro-Medonte, Ont.

How very generous of the Quebec government to chip in $50,000 taxpayer dollars toward René Angélil’s funeral. How many children in that province go to school hungry or seniors who must scrape by on a meagre pension? Steven Clift, Whitby
