A peninsula called Port au Port (shown) is almost an island in itself. Joined to Newfoundland by a narrow isthmus, it’s guarded at one end by a unique land form called the Gravels.

The shore is an explosion of pebbles and rocks in every colour. Take the trail here, past the shell of a fishing boat, through a stand of wind-crippled pine and along a path rising and falling like a summer serenade. Limestone “hoodoos” carved by wind and sea sprout up like surreal statues from great stone slabs.

You’d say it was one of the most beautiful hikes on the island until you go to Cape St. George on the same peninsula. Think pumpkin-painted cliffs 400 metres high. Think whales breeching in waves far below. Think a double dose of overwhelming beauty.
