FROM SPRINGSTEEN TO THE BEATLES, THE STRUMBELLAS’ SUMMER JAMS

- RYAN PORTER ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER

With “Spirits” getting adds on summer playlists, the Strumbellas recall the songs that have made their summers.

Simon Ward

› “I’m Goin’ Down,” Bruce Springsteen

“My dad was a lawyer and sometimes he’d do trade deals when his clients didn’t have the cash to cover bills.

“So one day my dad comes home in a burgundy convertible Nissan 300ZX that he got from a client. I remember we’d cruise through the country roads blasting Bruce Springsteen’s ‘I’m Goin’ Down’ on our way to the cottage every weekend. It was awesome.”

Isabel Ritchie

› “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Bonnie Tyler

“I first went to summer camp when I was 8 years old. My camp counsellor was obsessed with this song and played it every day. So whenever I hear this song, I think of the excitement of first being away from home and on my own adventure.”

Darryl James

› “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” the Beatles

“My first introduction to the Beatles on vinyl ( The White Album) was at my mom’s house on her record player (which I still use to this day!) and ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’ was my obsession. I cranked it so I could hear it out the back sliding doors while hanging out around the pool.”

Jeremy Drury

› “All About That Bass,” Meghan Trainor

“I was absolutely obsessed with Meghan Trainor’s ‘All About That Bass’ while on our first tour of the southern U.S. I’d constantly scan radio stations until I found it, which luckily seemed to happen every 10 minutes. I’m sure I drove the rest of the band crazy, but that’s what they get for letting the driver have control of the tunes. Every time I hear it now, I’m reminded of sunny skies, Arizona heat and making memories with my best friends.”

Jon Hembrey

› “The House That Heaven Built,” Japandroids

“I really got into their Celebration Rock album when the Strumbellas started touring across Canada, so I always associate that song with driving around and listening to music with my friends. It’s the perfect soundtrack for driving through the Rocky Mountains.”

Dave Ritter

› “Albright,” Supergrass

“This was track one on a mix tape that my first girlfriend made me. We got together in the summer, sneaking away for long evening walks in the conservation area near the house where I grew up. It was a righteous mix tape, with Van Morrison, George Harrison, Stevie Wonder and Propagandhi on it. I’m pretty sure I’ve still got it somewhere in a shoebox full of letters she wrote me when I moved away to go to university that fall.”
