Liberals lack accountability, integrity

- Edward P. Swynar, Newcastle

Re Time to deliver, Editorial June 13 The Star is correct in its assertion that a facelift is not enough to secure a Liberal re-election in 2018. However, based on the Ontario Liberals’ track record to date it would seem almost impossible for them to “improve the province in ways that Ontarians can see and feel” in the next two years. This is because their problem is not with good intentions or well-meaning plans, it is with implementation, and on this measure they have failed repeatedly to demonstrate anything remotely like good governance.

As one who has voted Liberal in the past and will probably do so in the future, I look for two things from my government: integrity and competence. On both measures this government has fallen so far short that they simply do not deserve to remain in office for another term. The 2018 election cannot come quickly enough. Jonathan Household, Niagara on the Lake So, Premier Kathleen Wynne wants to bring in “new blood” for her cabinet and embrace some gender parity. Unfortunately for Ontario taxpayers, the only “new blood” will probably be the continuous flow of our “blood” as the Liberals waste our tax dollars. She wants to “shuffle the deck,” but I fear that this deck contains only “jokers,” as we have seen from the performance of current cabinet members.

The new climate change policy will apparently cost the average household $13 per month. Perhaps one of the new cabinet members can do some “creative math,” as was done with the Pan Am Games budget, so that Ontarians will be able to meet their own household budget targets. If we do so, will we receive a “performance bonus,” naturally with our own tax dollars?

Premier Wynne should worry less about gender parity and more about taxpayer accountability. Warren Dalton, Scarborough This is akin to applying lipstick to a pig. It is what it is and no amount of window dressing can disguise the fact that this is a desperate government, facing its final two years of a misbegotten mandate.
