Sidewalk cyclists are causing havoc

- Bob Whittaker, Toronto

Re Council passes scaled-back bike plan, June 10 All well and good. Toronto needs bike lanes providing there is a commonsense approach over political constituency interests. Now what about administering the laws regarding cyclists to garner a better partnership with pedestrians and people driving vehicles?

For example, the aggressive driving of bicycles on sidewalks. I’m tolerant of children because of their inability to ride on the road, bike lane or not. It’s the entitled clowns pedalling along sidewalks making pedestrians step aside even on busy sidewalks such as Yonge, Mount Pleasant or Bayview that I’m concerned about the most.

I’m in my 80th year and have had a youthful cyclist resplendent in his club cycling gear tell me to step aside after I asked him to move to the road. It might have become a physical altercation if it hadn’t been for my embarrassment at people gathering. I contacted city hall and received only platitudes.

I was an ardent cyclist in my youth. It was nothing to pedal up to Jackson’s Point, there and back in a day, on a single speed bike and on a main highway.

However, I had to obey the traffic laws. And if I didn’t, I could receive a notification that was placed on my record through the attached red licence plate that had to be in full view on my bike.
