THE BARK OF ZORRO

Pug is conversationalist and avid napper

- JANE WELOWSZKY If you think you know what your animal companion is thinking, email petpsyche@gmail.com and tell us why they should be profiled.

Most adoring pet owners would do anything for their cherished companions, but could they speak for their furry or feathered or finned friends and tell us what they are thinking? To find out, we’re putting pet owners to the test with the personality questionnaire made famous by French novelist Marcel Proust.

Meet Meaghan Benfeito and Zorro. As a member of Canada’s Diving Team competing at the Rio Games this summer, Benfeito’s training schedule leaves little time for other pursuits, much to Zorro’s chagrin.

While on the road, Benfeito FaceTimes with him daily. “When he hears my voice he starts looking for me around the house,” she said.

Benfeito and Zorro both revere the Montreal Canadiens, but the discerning black pug draws the line at Justin Bieber (Benfeito’s favourite singer). Zorro has no interest in athletic pursuits either, and considers eating VitaLife sweet potato and duck twists while watching cartoons the best way to expend his energy.

That being said, Zorro encourages you to cheer on two-time Olympian, Benfeito, as she goes for gold at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 9, 17 and 18.

What is Zorro’s current state of mind?

I would say relaxed. He’s not a hyperactive dog, he’s pretty calm — even during the photo shoot just now — but he did need his apple and banana cookies to get through it!

What is Zorro’s most treasured possession?

It’s actually a beige pug and we call her Darla. She’s a stuffed toy that he sleeps with and plays with constantly. He just loves her.

Which talent would Zorro most like to have?

Probably to be able to talk. When we talk to him he always barks back, trying to talk (to us).

Who is Zorro’s hero of fiction?

Thomas the Tank Engine. When my godson, Teagan, comes over Zorro sits on the couch with him and they watch it (on television) together.

What is Zorro’s most marked characteristic?

He likes people that cuddle him, but with my dad, he prefers to sit beside him on the couch, or cuddle by his feet or legs. He only allows my mom, or me, or my sisters to actually hold him.

What is Zorro’s greatest fear?

He’s afraid of bottles — plastic bottles. As soon as he sees a Sprite bottle or big water bottle or things like that, he doesn’t like those.

Who or what is the greatest love of Zorro’s life?

My mom. He’s really attached to her — she’s the one that feeds him and wakes him up in the morning. Not that I don’t do it, I just don’t have as much time as she does. He follows her everywhere, and waits for her at the door when she comes back from work. He’s a momma’s boy!

What would Zorro’s favourite occupation be?

Probably a soccer player because he loves to run after the ball outside.

Who are Zorro’s heroes in real life?

My godson, Teagan. Even though he’s only two, he’s the only person that Zorro allows to go into his dog bowl, take his food, and feed him one piece at a time.

What is Zorro’s motto?

The longer you sleep, the longer you’ll live.
