A way to boost capacity on the TTC

-

Re Stop the TTC’s race to the bottom, Opinion July 17 Here is an easy way to increase capacity on the Yonge St. line during rush periods by 33 per cent — just add two extra cars to the back of the current six-car trains.

Since the new cars are configured with full open interior gangways, allowing riders to move freely from one end to the other, it is possible to add two cars to each train by not allowing the side doors on the additional cars to open at each station (as they would not fit the current platform lengths and still be in the tunnel). Thus passengers would need to walk to the adjacent cars to exit.

Riders could be reminded by audio and electronic text boards that their car’s doors will not open at the stations and they must exit from a forward car. This is done in London with great success. Kevin Albrecht, Toronto
