Texter ignored fire trucks

Re Should we go after walking texters? Letters

July 23 The recent discussions regarding texting while walking brought to mind a curious incident I witnessed last year.

While hiking down Yonge St., I heard the raucous screaming of two fire trucks and an ambulance racing south toward the intersection at Lawrence. Meanwhile, I saw a young girl strolling across Yonge, headphones on and phone in her hands. She didn’t look up.

The fire trucks, screaming, ended up going slowly around her. The ambulance also slowed and swerved. I stood with my mouth open.

When I told this story at Sunday family dinner, everybody burst out laughing. It was hilarious! But my 12-year-old granddaughter didn’t laugh. “She was in her texting world,” she explained. Marilyn White, Toronto Tired of dodging the numerous text walkers, I implemented my own solution: I simply let them bump into me.

At 6’ 3” and 200-plus pounds, this causes me no distress and, sadly, sometimes the texters’ phones clatter to the ground. Tsk. Pierre Vaillancourt, Toronto
