Parkette penalty: What’s city coming to?

-

Re Toddler program turfed from parkette, July 25 The example of Lynndale Parkette in the Beaches has finally proven to the people of Toronto how truly callous we are as a society when we penalize toddlers for learning and having fun. I know that some like peace and quiet in their neighbourhoods. But, come on. Toddlers?

There should be a law against complaining about children having fun. Just last week the City of Toronto finally agreed that children were responsible enough to get out of the way of a car when they are playing street hockey. Granted it took many years and many debates to finally let it happen. But an entire generation of children grew up not playing street hockey.

And a few weeks ago a resident was told to tear down a tree house he had built for his children. Or the two little girls selling lemonade who were fined for not having a permit.

With this complaint of toddlers making noise in a park it looks like the lawmakers and a few grouchy adults seem to think that toddlers are to be censured from learning to play together.

How long before we start to accuse babies of assault for kicking in the womb? Troy J. Young, Toronto

What else do toddlers do except make noise — especially when occupied and happy? I am not sure what was “unsafe” about the environment.
