‘DIFFERENT, NOT LESS’

AOK camp raises awareness that everyone has their own way of learning,

- KATIE HOWARTH SPECIAL TO THE STAR

Each week during the campaign, campers and staff from Fresh Air Fund camps will share their memories in their own words. Katie Howarth, 21, is a counsellor at Autism Ontario Kids (AOK) day camp.

I started working at Autism Ontario four summers ago, and I look forward to coming back every year. I love what I do because of every individual I work with.

Since I was little, I wanted to become a teacher, and this job has inspired me to follow this path. I have a passion for making a difference in the lives of individuals and creating an accepting atmosphere.

The saying, “different, not less” is probably the most important lesson I have learned in my time at AOK. Every person has their own way of learning and living, and just because some individuals have iPads to speak or become overwhelmed by their surroundings, does not make them any less than anybody else. There is a great misconception about those with autism, or any disability, but making people aware of the lesson of just “different, not less” makes a huge difference. Awareness ultimately turns into acceptance.

Every individual I have worked with at AOK has shaped who I am today. I have grown as a person, and I am so grateful to have learned important life skills from both staff and campers. I have learned to practise patience, understanding and acceptance.

I have had amazing opportunities to work with not only the campers, but their families as well. The families are always willing to go above and beyond for their children, and honestly, I admire them.

To the campers, staff and parents that make AOK an accepting and thriving environment, I thank and appreciate you all so much. It is truly an incredible experience working at AOK, and I will cherish the friendships and memories made here for a lifetime.
