Restoration of this heritage stone farmhouse, built in 1858, began in 1967 in consultation with prominent architect B. Napier Simpson, Jr. The 11⁄ 2- half-storey home known as Hillhead Farm has continued to be updated since then, and includes a unique “stone room,” just off the main-floor family room.

The home, located just east of Peterborough, contains about 3,000 square feet of living space.

“My family and I have loved life here for almost 30 years. We’re among a handful of owners since 1858, when our house was handcrafted by Scottish stone masons and artisans who settled here,” says homeowner Mary Mowry.

“We’re surrounded by stone walls, elegant rooms, large hand-blown glass windows, trees and a parade of wildlife and colour. The landscaped grounds feature apple and pear trees, rhubarb, strawberries, numerous perennial flowers and flowering bushes,” adds Mowry.

“Our home is both comfortable and charming, with a picturesque view from every room. And although it is a stone house, it is very cosy in the winter months because it has been well insulated.”

With easy access to Hwy. 7, the house is about a 15-minute drive to Peterborough, and a little more than a 90-minute drive to Toronto.

Listing agent Paul Rouillard says the home has been built with “stunning artisan craftsmanship” and features built-in antique pine cabinets, wide-planked solid pine floors throughout, extra-wide original wainscotting and trim, and three exterior porches.

“It’s about a 20-minute drive to Trent University and a wellness centre, where there are state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facilities com- bined with access to the Otonabee River,” says Rouillard.

A long driveway leads to the home, whose stone exterior features wood trim, large windows and decorative posts. The three-car detached garage adjacent to the home also has a stone exterior and a heated office space.

The foyer features a hardwood floor and transom window. Next to the foyer is the living room, with a solid wood door, hardwood floor, a built-in cabinet, and two windows with wainscotting and wood trim.

On the other side of the foyer is the formal dining room, also with a solid wood door, wood floor, a large window, a chandelier, a built-in cabinet, a wood-burning fireplace with a brick surround and wood mantle.

The compact kitchen includes a window, a deep sink, a two-seat breakfast bar, stainless-steel appliances, many cupboards with glass inserts, a large plank wood floor, and over-the-cupboard lighting.

Adjoining the kitchen is a breakfast area, with a wood floor and large window.

The spacious main-floor family room is entered through the dining room. A focal point of this room is the wood-burning stove. This room is also fitted with a wood plank ceiling, a wood floor, ceiling fan, four large windows and a French door walkout.

The stone room has a stone floor, stone walls, a wood-burning stove, a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, and a vaulted wood-beamed ceiling and two walkouts.

On this level there is also a den with a wood floor, as well as a powder room.

On the upper level, the master bedroom stands out with a protruding window with California shutters, a closet, a wood floor and a vaulted ceiling. There are two more bedrooms, both with wood floors, closets and vaulted ceilings.

The four-piece main bathroom has a claw-foot tub, a shower, a wood floor, wainscotting, a vaulted ceiling, a chandelier-type light and protruding window with a plant shelf.

There is an upstairs laundry area with a built-in stainless-steel washer and dryer. The basement is unfinished.

The property also includes a twostorey coach house, a large stone and log barn, a pond, gardens, fenced pastures and wooded land.
