NHL notebook: Crouse dealt to desert, Avs make Monster move to replace Roy

-

Max Domi and Anthony Duclair will see a familiar face when the Arizona Coyotes open training camp next month.

The Coyotes added former Canadian junior star Lawson Crouse and injured veteran Dave Bolland in a trade with the Florida Panthers on Thursday. The Panthers get two draft picks in return: a 2017 third-rounder and a conditional 2018 secondrounder that could become another 2017 third.

The Coyotes had to take on the final three seasons of Bolland’s five-year, $27.5-million contract to add Crouse, the 11th pick in the 2015 draft.

“I love to win,” Crouse said after the deal was announced. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to make that team. However they want me to play, that’s the way I’m going to play. For me, that’s doing the little things right and being a good team guy.”

Nagging injuries limited the 30year-old Bolland to 25 games last season, and Arizona GM John Chayka said the ex-Leaf isn’t expected to play for the foreseeable future and could be placed on long-term injured reserve.

Crouse is a six-foot-four left winger who could make his NHL debut this fall at age 19, joining a young core featuring his former world junior teammates.

“I think he’s physically ready. I think he’s mentally ready,” Chayka said. “What it really comes down to is the old cliché: You come to camp and you earn your spot.”

Panthers assistant GM Eric Joyce said it was “incredibly hard to give up a good, young player” in order to shed Bolland’s salary. REPLACING ROY: Jared Bednar will replace Patrick Roy as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche. Roy resigned abruptly earlier this month.

The 44-year-old Bednar won the AHL’s Calder Cup behind the bench of the Lake Erie Monsters this past season. He also won the ECHL’s Kelly Cup in 2009 with the South Carolina Stingrays.

Bednar played a decade in the minors as a defenceman and followed a similar path as a coach. Unlike in his playing days, Bednar has reached the NHL in coaching.

Capitals assistant coach Lane Lambert and Blackhawks assistant Kevin Dineen were the other finalists for the job, according to the Denver Post. PIRRI TO BIG APPLE: The New York Rangers signed unrestricted freeagent forward Brandon Pirri to a one-year deal reportedly worth $1.1 million. Pirri, a second-round pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2009, racked up 14 goals and 15 assists in 61 games with the Florida Panthers and Anaheim Ducks last season. He was a 22-goal scorer with the Panthers in 2014-15.
