Brett Ryan’s statement to court in January 2009

-

“At this opportunity I would like to say how sorry I am for the, for the trouble and trauma I’ve caused everyone, and I would also like to apologize to the people of these institutions and to my family and friends for everything I’ve put them through, and I do realize that regardless of my problems, there is no excuse or any sort of justification for my extreme and selfish, selfish actions.

So I know considering my depression and my stress the right course would have been to go to my family and seek support. I know that I was wrong to actually take desperate measures, and they were quite inappropriate, and definitely cost a lot of time and trouble to many parties that I really didn’t — I wasn’t aware of at the time. The reality is I do know that the consequences won’t just be suffered by me but also by so many people, like my family and the community, and for all of that I would like to say how sorry I am. At this point, after your sentence and what I’m submitted to, I would like to hope that my apologies offer some small consolation, but with my sentence and the time that’s given to me I will definitely make all the, all the choices and all my future actions to be a positive one, to restore my respect and to try and give back as much as I can to the community.”
