Writer shot dead outside courthouse

Outspoken Jordanian writer Nahed Hattar, 56, was shot dead in front of the courthouse Sunday where he had been on trial for posting a cartoon deemed offensive to Islam on Facebook. Police said the shooter was a former imam at a local mosque.

Witnesses and police said Hattar was entering the courthouse when the gunman shot him at close range.
