Swift backlash

Toronto taco chain apologizes for ‘rude and insensitive’ joke,

Popular Toronto taco chain La Carnita is under fire for posting a photo on Instagram with a caption many are saying is misogynistic and promotes rape culture.

“What if Donald said, ‘grab her by the taco’ . . . ” read the caption to a photo of tacos.

The post was inspired by U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s comments in a 2005 video recording released last week, in which he spoke about grabbing women by their genitals.

Public reaction was swift and furious. The restaurant’s Facebook page has been flooded with one-star reviews, with many patrons vowing to never eat there again.

“Disgusting!” wrote a Facebook user. “You should be ashamed of yourselves disrespecting women like that.”

“Treating women like they are less than is unacceptable and really quite shameful,” wrote another. “You need to educate yourselves on respect.”

The backlash prompted La Carnita to delete its post and issue an apology on Facebook and Twitter.

“Tonight, we made a mistake. A big one,” it read. “We used a caption that was dumb, rude and insensitive. Once we realized our error, we quickly removed it. For anyone who saw it, know that we understand your anger and fully realize why it was inappropriate. We truly apologize. We can do better, and we will.”
