Green P lot long overdue for cleaning

- JACK LAKEY STAFF REPORTER

Nobody likes to get poop on their shoes, but it’s a much bigger tragedy if you track it into your car.

That’s what happened to Toronto lawyer Bob Lash after returning to his car in a Green P parking lot outside a Toronto Coach Terminal building, also known as the Bay St. bus terminal, on the west side of Elizabeth St.

Lash copied us an email he sent to city officials, including Mayor John Tory, about the mess he and his wife stumbled into after he had the “misfortune” of parking in a Green P lot at the south end of the terminal.

“To say that it was disgusting, an eyesore for the city and a health hazard is an understatement,” he said.

The coach terminal buildings are on the east and west side of Elizabeth St., just north of Dundas St., and are owned by the TTC. They were leased to private bus lines in 2012, but the TTC is still responsible for them.

We went to the building on the west side, which has been closed since 2010, and found a thick layer of pigeon droppings coating a walkway that runs along the south side, bordering the Green P lot.

An awning that extends from the building over the walkway is used as a roost by pigeons that splatter the pedestrian area and even the curb stones in the parking lot.

So it looks like things are going in the right direction, and none too soon. Status: Stewart Green, who deals with media for the TTC, said the private bus lines are responsible for maintenance. He confirmed that remedial work is underway this week to prevent birds from roosting in the awning, and that the entire area will be thoroughly power-washed. Correction: In our Monday column, we misspelled Mr. Pip Wedge’s name and misidentified his gender. Sorry about that.
