Moose decline troubling
Re Ontario moose population faces troubling
decline, Oct. 27 Kudos to the environmental commissioner for taking on moose decline. We need swift science-based action. An uncontrolled proliferation of logging roads spun like a spider web across the north, and paid for by an outdated road subsidy, has steadily increased hunting access and decreased roadless areas.
Moose need roadless areas as refuges. And while moose populations are declining we should not be hunting calves.
Combined, these actions would give a lifeline not only to moose but to First Nations, sport hunters and the tourism operators who rely on healthy moose populations. That’s a quadruple win for species, society, climate and even the bottom line. Dave Pearce, manager, Forest Conservation, CPAWS Wildlands League, Toronto
