Four craziest new Hyundai concepts

- Dan Ilika AutoGuide.com

There may not be an automaker that’s got the SEMA thing dialed in better than Hyundai.

While most car manufacturers use the show as a chance to display the latest bolt-on parts, Hyundai works with aftermarket shops and suppliers to bring out some of the craziest concepts in Las Vegas. And this year is no different, with the automaker showing off five unique rides that range from a little out-there to downright outrageous.

4. ARK Road Racer Elantra concept Hyundai has teamed up with ARK Performance again this year, with an Elantra concept that features a custom turbo kit and rides on coilovers, with its wheels tucked inside a wide body kit that completely transforms the look of Hyundai’s compact sedan.

3. Gurnade Veloster concept Cut from the same cloth as the Elantra is a Gurnade-built Veloster fitted with a custom roll cage and a handful of carbon-fibre exterior parts, and finished in PPG’s Magic Magenta paint. Under the hood is a handful of intake parts sourced from 845 Motorsports, while coilovers and a sixpiston big-brake kit from NEO Motorsports are hidden behind a set of 19-inch OZT wheels.

2. Rockstar Santa Fe concept On the other end of the spectrum is a lifted Santa Fe riding on 35-inch tires that’s been decked out with rock sliders and off-road bumpers to make Hyundai’s family-friendly crossover at least look the part of a trail-ready ride. Little was done to the Santa Fe’s 3.3-litre engine outside of the addition of a nitrous oxide injection system because — well, because.

1. IONIQ Salt-Flats Racer Hyundai also unveiled a skunkworks salt-flats racer based on the IONIQ electrified sedan that recently set hybrid land-speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Nothing was done to the IONIQ’s hybrid internals, with low-restriction intake and exhaust systems added to go along with nitrous injection. The front valance and grille from the electric IONIQ was added, while the whole car was lowered about 100 millimetres to aid the aerodynamics. And after blasting to almost 254 km/h at Bonneville, the IONIQ now holds an FIA-approved production-based hybrid vehicle land-speed record.
