Pretty up your packaging

- DEBRA NORTON SPECIAL TO THE STAR

Everyone loves home-baked treats — the secret to making them giftable is in the presentation.

Whether you are hosting a holiday cookie swap and want to set up a packaging station for guests or baking up a storm in your kitchen, you’ll want to find a festive solution to package your carefully decorated treats.

Try these simple ideas to turn your homemade treats into pretty giftables everyone will love. No need to buy holiday specific packaging when you can use items you may have around the house and can reuse them once all that’s left of the cookies is crumbs.

Plan ahead Set aside jars that are destined for the recycling bin to be used to package your holiday baking. Pretty jam or mason jars are perfect for this use. Just give them a good run through the dishwasher to clean and sanitize. Fill the jars with cookies and add some ribbon or string and a gift tag.

Takeout boxes are perfect for packaging your confections. Line with a little parchment paper and stack your cookies carefully inside. Takeout boxes can be purchased in most party supply stores.

Purchase a case of mason jars from the grocery store and stack them with holiday cookies. It’s a practical way to package a large number of cookies.

Add a tag Stock up on blank tags and string, such as baker’s twine, ribbon or scraps of fabric torn into ribbons that you can wrap around your packages. Pick up a stamp and ink pad from the craft store or have a special rubber stamp made in advance that you can use year after year. Add a little glitter to your package with glitter tape. It’s an easy way to make a plain tag or jar sparkle.

Use festive touches Don’t forget to add a little something extra to elevate your packaging. Jingle bells, glitter tape, holiday ornaments and crafting bits can all add a festive touch.
