Dubnyk thriving under radar with Wild

- KEVIN MCGRAN SPORTS REPORTER

If Devan Dubnyk isn’t the best goalie in the NHL right now he’s certainly in the conversation.

The Minnesota Wild goaltender leads the NHL with a .946 save percentage and is second with a 1.63 goals-against average, a big reason for the early-season success of the Wild, who play the Maple Leafs at the ACC on Wednesday night.

“He has given us a chance every night, he has been spectacular, especially late in games,” said Wild coach Bruce Boudreau. “We play so many close games he has to make saves to get us to overtime.”

Dubnyk has worked hard at his craft, digging himself out of holes, reinventing how he plays the position and thriving in a system that keeps scoring chances low.

Dubnyk keeps tabs on other goalies, looking for ways to improve, even after he became a proponent of the puck-tracking system — tracking the puck by moving the head instead of just the eyes — that saved his career when he burned through four teams in the 2014-15 season.

“Since the start of my career, I like to watch goalies play in certain situations. I know how I like to play them. I watch Tuukka Rask, or Jonathan Quick, and go, ‘that looks good.’ But it doesn’t mean I’ll be able to go do it.”

Dubnyk is 4-1-1with a 2.53 GAA and a.918 save percentage in seven games (six starts) against the Leafs.
