Bloemen blazes to World Cup gold

BERLIN— Canadian speed skater TedJan Bloemen earned his first career 5,000-metre victory on the World Cup circuit Saturday. The Calgary skater edged New Zealand’s Peter Michael by 0.81 seconds. Said the 30year-old Bloemen: “This gold medal win is really great going into the world single distance championsh­ips.” It was his third medal of the World Cup season, matching his total from last year. He finished fifth in the 5,000 at the last world championsh­ips.
