Handshake seen around the world

-

Re No hugs — just a handshake, Feb. 14 A detailed analysis of the Trump-Trudeau handshake merited front-page treatment in the Star and a prominent mention by leading columnists.

Had this sophisticated tool for determining the power relationship between world leaders been available when Hitler met Chamberlain, the course of world history would undoubtedly have been altered.

We are eagerly looking forward to the Star’s in-depth examination of the next Trudeau-Wynne handshake to give us a definitive reading on the status of federal-provincial relationships. Pav Penna, Georgetown

Little wonder that U.S. President Donald Trump views most of the media with disdain. I watched this first meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from beginning to end. I found the proceedings to be collaborative and friendly, with both parties seeming to achieve their goals. And it wasn’t boring as suggested in your editorial.

The picture that the Star selected to feature on the front page Tuesday was grossly misleading and undoubtedly embarrassing to our prime minister and to many Canadians.

We need the media to help support our democratic way of life. By alienating political leaders we run the risk of shutting down an important source of information. Donald Cangiano, Oakville

Why would the editors of the Toronto Star lower themselves and write on the front page of Tuesday’s paper “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau eyes the extended hand of U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday,” when it is obvious that President Trump is merely gesturing with both hands while talking to Trudeau?

Trudeau is not “eyeing” anything, only politely listening.

My son often tells me that I should change my newspaper. Are you trying to prove him right? I love my Star. Toshiko Kikuta, North York

Re Five revealing moments from the Trudeau-Trump day, Feb. 13 Thank you to the Star for your article. We all need to know that there are world leaders who are able to hold their own against our American bully tyrant, Trump. For anyone who missed the televised Q& A, Prime Minister Trudeau gave Trump a lesson in not only diplomacy, but also in an educated, inclusive philosophical world view. World viewers understood; I doubt that Trump did.

Thank you, Trudeau. Frightened United States citizens are heartened to hear a voice of sanity to the north of us. Judy Platz, Newton, N.H.
