Simon Goldhill introduces us to this odd family with a kiss, in 1853, between Edward White Benson and Minnie Sidgwick. They married when she was 18, and had six children. Minnie left Edward and the kids when she found she preferred women. The offspring went on to find fame for their contributions to culture and letters.
