Man follows his GPS into Queens Quay TTC tunnel

- EVELYN KWONG STAFF REPORTER

A driver whose SUV got stuck in a streetcar tunnel leading into Queens Quay station said he was just “following his GPS” despite numerous Do Not Enter signs in the area.

He faces a $425 fine after his vehicle blocked access to the station, forcing the 509 and 510 streetcars to turn back at Spadina Ave. until late Thursday morning.

TTC workers had to use a crane and slings to lift the silver Mitsubishi SUV from where it was lodged on the tracks near the platform.

The vehicle was discovered by a street- car operator shortly before 4 a.m.

The driver, who initially left the scene but later returned, “claims he was following his GPS,” said TTC spokesperson Brad Ross.

The man was charged by transit enforcement with illegal entry, Ross said.

This is not the first time a vehicle has got stuck in the streetcar tunnel.

When a similar incident happened in 2014, Ross explained that cars entering the tunnel can get stuck on the tracks, which are raised above ground level.

It took approximately eight hours for the car to be removed in 2014. In a 2015 incident, it took less than two hours. With files from Sophie van Bastelaer
