Police mistaken on need to report

-

Re Enforce safe status, Feb. 22

Thank you for highlighting the failure of the city of Toronto in general and the Toronto Police Services in particular to honour and implement the sanctuary city policy that council has adopted.

Of all the city departments, the police service is the one that needs to be constantly reminded of the policy the most. The comment by a TPS spokesperson that “if you become aware of (illegal immigration status), you are required by law to report it” shows how ignorant police are of both the law and the policy. No one, not even the police, is obligated by law to report so-called “illegal immigration status.”

If this is what police think they are required to do, then we need police Chief Saunders to correct his officers’ mistaken belief. Avvy Yao-Yao Go, Metro Toronto Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, Toronto
