Nose stretchers in Ottawa, too

-

While it is good to track things like the 80 times Donald Trump has lied and deceived in the past four weeks, why is there no similar coverage in one of Canada’s leading newspapers for a Canadian prime minister and his assorted Liberal cabinet ministers? Indeed, the string of broken promises, deceptive statements, “alternate facts” and nose-stretching deceit emanating from Parliament Hill is impressive indeed.

Consider, for example, how Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett, Health Minister Jane Philpott and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continue to paint themselves as the best friends indigenous people in this land could ever want. Yet they have completely failed to act on required policy changes 13 months after the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal called on them to end racially discriminatory practices against some 165,000 indigenous children.

Despite two additional compliance orders and a House of Com- mons motion calling on them to comply, which they themselves even voted for, this government has yet to properly act on the findings of the tribunal. Tireless advocate Cindy Blackstock of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society has to go to court again next month to try and win justice for indigenous children.

Trump is a loathsome individual, but extensive coverage of his reprehensible behaviour is low-hanging fruit. How about some investigative journalism closer to home that tallies the lies and deceptions coming out of Ottawa? Matthew Behrens, Perth, Ont.
