Choke collar must be used correctly

-

Re Collar bylaw spurs pointed debate, March 13

A training collar (more commonly referred to as a choke collar) is an effective training tool when used properly. The collar must be put on the dog correctly, and must be used correctly. It is a matter of education, and the majority of pet owners do not understand its purpose and need to be shown the correct way to use it. These owners would be better advised to use a flat or martingale collar.

It should be noted that your best friend should never be left unattended when wearing a training collar. Having said that, responsible dog owners who are having training problems, cannot control their dogs or walk their dogs comfortably should seek professional help.

A bylaw banning the use of a dog training collar is senseless and, unfortunately, will do nothing to eliminate the shameful and despicable cases of animal mistreatment. Joan L. White, Brampton

I have been dealing with dogs and their problem owners for nearly 20 years in Toronto. To quote Cesar Millan, “It’s never the dog.”

Many, many dog owners are lazy, irresponsible and yes, cruel. Many dog owners do not follow rules. Most do not know the rules, and they don’t care.

A tool like a prong collar or slip collar in the wrong hands is an instrument of torture.

These collars are not a substitute for obedience training, but when used by knowledgeable, caring owners, they are a big help when confronted by a problem animal. Cathy White, Toronto
