Scott returns in second Goon flick
If nothing else, returning to play enforcer Doug Glatt in Goon: Last of the Enforcers has left Seann William Scott in better shape physically and made him a better hockey player.
Scott grew up in snowy Minnesota, but never played the game, in part because he’s the youngest of seven children and hockey is an expensive sport.
In the original Goon movie, “the skating was as good as it gets. That was me at my best. They had to work in the fact that I couldn’t stop (on skates),” the 40-year-old actor said, with a laugh.
“People are going to expect me to be better (at skating) than I was in the first movie because it has been some years later. So I skated for three weeks . . . but I got better, a lot better. I mean, it couldn’t get any worse,” Scott said.
Scott said he also bulked up bigtime for the first film in all the wrong ways to look the part of a beefy tough guy.
“I gained weight, which was really easy because I just ate a bunch of food and drank a bunch of beer and just like that, I was 25 pounds fatter. But unfortunately what I didn’t do was . . . go to the gym, so in the first movie, I was kind of a fat s--- and not in that great of a shape and that made it really challenging,” Scott said.
“This time around, I was like ‘I want to be in really good shape so I’m not just dying in between takes.’ This time, when we had little breaks, I was still on the ice skating around be- cause I was enjoying it,” he added.
Last of the Enforcers takes place several years after the 2011 original and finds Doug facing the end of his hockey career after a serious injury.
“(Doug)’s facing — which was one of the things that appealed to me the most, what a lot of athletes go through — how do you transition to life, not having anybody really cheer for you anymore?” Scott said.
That struggle “feels real” and made simple-minded Doug more complex and more interesting to play.
Filming the sequel in Toronto rather than in various parts of Manitoba, like the first time around, also gave Scott a new appreciation for the city.
“Oh dude, I love it so much. I’ve lived in New York for the last10 years and I’ve already started looking at places (here) to rent,” Scott said.
Scott said he’s gotten close with Jay Baruchel, who co-wrote both movies, directed the sequel and now lives in Toronto, as well as the rest of the cast.
“These guys, all the actors from the movie, and Jay have become my best friends and to be able to see these guys and hang out with them all the time . . . would be awesome,” he said.
