Convenient water fountains should replace water bottles

-

Re Ontario government has taken sides against

the bottled water industry, Opinion, April 10 I just spent the weekend at the Queen’s University athletic centre, which has a “no plastic bottles” policy. I used my refillable one at convenient and welldesigned water fountains throughout the facility.

Elizabeth Griswold’s tirade against the premier and the Liberal government for its “regulatory assault” against the bottled-water industry demonstrates that she does not understand that circumstances and attitudes can change with new information and technologies.

What may have seemed appropriate in 2007 or 2009 is no longer acceptable in 2017, when we see the sea of litter caused by discarded plastic bottles that proved to be an expensive way to peddle ordinary tap water.

The industry has proved itself to be an economic and environmental disaster, whose benefit of convenience could be overcome if decent water fountains were available in all Ontario facilities. Adam Quinan, North York
