Baseball notebook: Detroit outfielder taken to hospital after getting hit in face by pitch

MINNEAPOLIS— Detroit Tigers centrefielder JaCoby Jones was taken to hospital Saturday after getting hit in the face by a pitch.

Jones left Saturday’s game against Minnesota in the third inning when he was drilled in the left side of his mouth by a 90 mph fastball from Twins reliever Justin Haley. Jones went down but then sprang to his feet, tossed his helmet away and ran up the third base line in the direction of the Tigers’ dugout.

He was met by manager Brad Ausmus and a trainer, who put a towel to Jones’ bleeding mouth. The 24-year- old rookie was escorted back to the bench and removed from the game.

After the Tigers’ 5-4 victory, Ausmus said Jones had a “nasty split lip” and was undergoing a CT scan at the hospital.

TIGERS: The Tigers placed first baseman Miguel Cabrera on the 10-day disabled list earlier with a strained right groin.

Cabrera was injured while diving for a ground ball in the sixth inning of the Tigers’ game against the Twins on Friday. The 34-year-old slugger is hitting .268 with three home runs and nine RBIs this season.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Tigers recalled catcher John Hicks from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.

ANGELS: The Los Angeles Angels moved right-hander Garrett Richards to the 60-day disabled list with a strained right biceps.

Richards missed most of last season with a partially torn elbow ligament, but chose rest and stem-cell injections over Tommy John surgery. An MRI exam earlier this month showed nerve irritation in Richards’ biceps, but apparently no problems with his elbow ligament.

Los Angeles also placed reliever Cam Bedrosian on the 10-day DL with a right groin strain.

RED SOX: One day later, Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and manager John Farrell were still sore about Manny Machado’s spikesup slide.

Pedroia was not in Boston’s starting lineup Saturday after hurting his knee and ankle in the eighth inning of Friday night’s 2-0 loss to Baltimore.

Farrell was so angered over Machado’s action that he called the league office, seeking clarification about the rule designed to protect infielders from late and aggressive slides.

“Clearly there is a difference in opinion in how that rule was interpreted and the slide,” Farrell said. “Bottom line, if that slide last night is not deemed an illegal slide, we should just get rid of the rule.”
