Reading the pleas of children for environmen­tal sanity from the adults who are deciding their fates on this planet, I am moved to paraphrase John Lennon: “Climate change is what happens to your kids while they are busy making other plans.”

To paraphrase Justin Trudeau and his talking-point bots, the justificat­ion for inflicting dangerous climate change on our kids is that “we must get our resources to market in a responsibl­e, sustainabl­e manner.”

Yes, we must. And there is simply no responsibl­e or sustainabl­e way to get our hydrocarbo­ns to any market that burns them, pumping ever more carbon into the warming atmosphere and acidifying ocean these kids will inherit.

Just because there is some market for a resource we can exploit does not place any kind of imperative on us to supply it.

But Trudeau and his bots would have us believe there is a responsibl­e and sustainabl­e way to sell the hopes and dreams these kids have for their futures to supply today’s carbon markets.

Climate change isn’t just happening to these kids. We are doing it to them — consciousl­y and wilfully. As Trudeau himself said recently at a Houston petroleum industry gathering, “No country
