Come From Away gets its own doc

A documentar­y about the story behind the Broadway musical Come From Away is among eight features commission­ed by the Movie Network (TMN) for TV and theatrical debuts.

Others include Grass 2, a sequel to Ron Mann’s 2000 documentar­y about marijuana; a bio-doc about Toronto rock band Triumph, Rock & Roll Machine; and Anthropoce­ne, the final chapter in a trilogy by Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky about humans’ impact on the planet.

Bell Media also announced production has wrapped on Man Machine Poem (working title), a behind-thescenes look also by Baichwal and Burtynsky at the Tragically Hip’s 2016 cross-Canada tour, announced after lead singer Gord Downie was diagnosed with brain cancer. Moze Mossanen ( Unsung: Behind the Glee) is directing Come From Away: From Gander to Broadway (working title), about the relationsh­ip between residents of Gander, N.L., and airline passengers diverted there on Sept. 11, 2001, and how it inspired the musical.

Also on the TMN slate are The Inconvenie­nt Indian, inspired by indigenous author Thomas King’s bestsellin­g, award-winning book; Legacy, about the contributi­ons of the French in North America; Out of the Mouths, about a generation of children raised on social media; and The Ricky Kelly Project, also from Ron Mann, about one of the last guitar shops on Carmine St. in Greenwich Village.
