Come From Away gets its own doc
A documentary about the story behind the Broadway musical Come From Away is among eight features commissioned by the Movie Network (TMN) for TV and theatrical debuts.
Others include Grass 2, a sequel to Ron Mann’s 2000 documentary about marijuana; a bio-doc about Toronto rock band Triumph, Rock & Roll Machine; and Anthropocene, the final chapter in a trilogy by Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky about humans’ impact on the planet.
Bell Media also announced production has wrapped on Man Machine Poem (working title), a behind-thescenes look also by Baichwal and Burtynsky at the Tragically Hip’s 2016 cross-Canada tour, announced after lead singer Gord Downie was diagnosed with brain cancer. Moze Mossanen ( Unsung: Behind the Glee) is directing Come From Away: From Gander to Broadway (working title), about the relationship between residents of Gander, N.L., and airline passengers diverted there on Sept. 11, 2001, and how it inspired the musical.
Also on the TMN slate are The Inconvenient Indian, inspired by indigenous author Thomas King’s bestselling, award-winning book; Legacy, about the contributions of the French in North America; Out of the Mouths, about a generation of children raised on social media; and The Ricky Kelly Project, also from Ron Mann, about one of the last guitar shops on Carmine St. in Greenwich Village.
