Trump’s media war mirrors Harper’s

Re Criticism only makes Trump more powerful,

Watt, April 30 Columnist Jaime Watt is onto something. He points out that the media continue to refuse to accept the fact that a large number of Americans reject the opinions of the “elites” and the pundits. It is amusing that the media, with a 20-per-cent public approval rating, feel justified in panning Trump’s popularity, which is twice as high as theirs.

Similarly, the Democrats simply cannot accept the fact they deserved to lose because they put forward a flawed candidate who ran a deplorable campaign with a platform that was incomprehe­nsible and meaningles­s to many voters.

We have a Canadian parallel in Harper’s success. He correctly recognized that the media was never going to be fair and proceeded to win elections by ignoring the national press.

That aspect of the rise to power of Trump and Harper is a positive developmen­t. One can win without media support and huge campaign spending. And that’s a good thing. Pav Penna, Georgetown Jamie Watt argues that Trump is immune to criticism; that to do so only makes him stronger.

I would like to know what he thinks someone should do if they believe that what Trump and his cronies are doing is destroying the environmen­t, harmful to democracy and threatens the very fabric of not only the U.S. but much of the world.
