Don’t blame seniors for being alive

Re The graying of Canada, May 1 Aging is not a crime. It is indeed a gift from God and the old can provide wisdom and love to the coming generation­s.

Do not blame seniors for being alive. This kind of article is exactly what is needed to encourage hate crimes against seniors. We are not the problem: The mismanagem­ent of more than half a century of taxes by the government is the problem. There was plenty of tax money — where did it go?

Articles like this will cause seniors to be targeted by haters. It is already happening. The haters think we are easy targets — some of us will be and some of us will not. Cathy White, Toronto There are hospitals for sick children across Canada — centres of excellence and compassion for children suffering from a wide array of diseases and ailments.

With the so-called greying of Canada, why are there not hospitals for sick seniors? We, too, suffer from a wide degree of ailments but too often are simply told it is because we are just getting old. And when a serious problem is finally diagnosed, depending on where you live, you may be put on a waiting list.

A model for excellence has already been establishe­d for sick children. Why not make use of that model to serve seniors? Pat Sherbin, Grafton, Ont.
