Putting Mother’s Day in perspective

-

Re It’s time to put an end to Mother’s Day, May 14 Hooray for Emma Teitel’s candid article about putting an end to Mother’s Day, as well as Father’s Day. She expressed exactly what I’ve been thinking every year when these “commercialized” days roll around. I’ve always felt that mothers and fathers should be honoured and appreciated every day, not just once a year. Certainly there’s a lot of angst and stress for both children and mothers. Mothers who have passed away, mothers who have left families, mothers who are abusive, mothers who are drug addicts or alcoholics, etc. etc.

Far from being a happy day, as Ms. Teitel states, it’s not what the originator of Mother’s Day had intended, and for this reason alone it should be scrapped. Perhaps the money spent on mothers could be sent to a charity set up to help orphaned children who lost their mothers or never knew their mothers, at least this would be a worthwhile cause. If not then, perhaps a day honouring “children without mothers” would make more sense than “Mother’s Day.” Mari Carlo, Toronto

Restraint is a challenge as I respond to Ms. Emma Teitel’s article. What nonsense and rubbish. There is nothing more beautiful than a mother; to set aside one day a year to honour her is a privilege and something millions of people look forward to each year. There are many things in this world that need fixing; Mother’s Day is not one of them. Ms. Teitel should direct her energies toward other matters. In a way I feel sorry for Ms. Teitel and her mother. Re Dr. Mom, May 14 What a delightful front page article to feature on Mother’s Day. It is always refreshing to read a feel-good article, and such articles always trump the “other articles” which we see and endure far too often, in my view. Congratulations on a well-chosen and inspirational article, especially on Mother’s Day. Richard Desrocher, Toronto
