A common sense approach to trail safety

-

Re Improve trail safety, May 28

The suggestion to have a guardrail on that piece of the Goodman Trail at Jameson Ave. is a good one. Cyclists travelling west are going downhill and eastbound cars are usually moving fast. Unfortunately, there is an accident waiting to happen there and at many other spots on the trail due to volume and unsafe behaviour. I see this every day and people need to change their behaviour, no matter what the city does in terms of improvements.

Most people would agree with the following but hundreds refuse to do the basics: 1. Hands on the handlebars 2. Cellphones off or pull over to use 3. Slow down: kids, pedestrians and less-skilled cyclists often make unexpected moves 4. Parents, stay close to your kids 5. Stop at stop signs and red lights (no kidding) 6. Pedestrians, please use identified part of the trail where it exists 7. Signal or yell when passing or changing lanes. Mike Faye, Toronto
