My Favourite Murder, John Mulaney, SNL vets Slate, Pharoah also coming

This year’s JFL42 comedy festival will bring in popular favourites Bill Burr and John Mulaney, a rising star in Ali Wong, and a reunited Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!

The lineup, officially announced Tuesday, features six headliners playing the Sony Centre during the fest’s run from Sept. 21-30: the above four, plus veteran standup Tom Segura and the popular true-crime podcast My Favourite Murder, hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. Wong’s JFL42 show comes in addition to her three previously announced (and sold out) gigs in September at the Winter Garden Theatre.

Other familiar names coming for the standup-dominated festival’s sixth year: Saturday Night Live veterans Jenny Slate and Jay Pharoah, Janeane Garofalo, The Daily Show’s Michelle Wolf, Roy Wood Jr. from the Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Rhys Darby from Flight of the Conchords, Jen Kirkman, Liza Treyger, Rachel Feinstein, Brian Posehn, Kyle Kinane, Rory Scovel, the Lucas Brothers, Britain’s Gina Yashere, Beth Stelling, Mark Normand, Ali Siddiq and Morgan Murphy.

The daytime fare of the JFL42 ComedyCon — interviews and podcast tapings — is back for its second year. Also returning is the unique JFL 42 format, which in its first year led standup Todd Barry to declare it “the world’s most complicated comedy festival.”

After picking a single headliner, pass-buyers book their preferences for other shows online well in advance, and then venues are found to match the demand for the various performers. Once the fest is underway, a pass-holder who “checks in” at shows online gets a credit to book another show — theoretically letting a diligent hustler see dozens of performers over the fest’s 10 days.

Canadian stand-ups on the bill include Sara Hennessey, Sandra Battaglini, Chris Locke, Sophie Buddle, Che Durena, Chris Robinson, Eman El-Husseini and Mike Rita, as well as local sketch duo Soul Decision. The annual SiriusXM Top Comic contest is also part of the package, and even this doesn’t fill out the lineup — a few names are yet to be announced. Passes go on sale June 2 at jfl42.com.
