Historic mosque destroyed in Mosul

-

Daesh destroyed Mosul’s al-Nuri mosque — also known as Mosul’s Great Mosque — and its iconic leaning minaret late Wednesday night when fighters detonated explosives inside the structures.

In a statement posted online Wednesday night, Daesh, also known as ISIS and ISIL, claimed an airstrike carried out by the U.S. destroyed the mosque and minaret.

The leaning minaret had stood for more than 840 years.
