Current events seep into Teen Choice

-

The Teen Choice Awards took time out during Sunday night’s ceremony to consider the world its young audience will inherit.

With the two-hour broadcast coming a day after the violence in Charlottesville, Va., some winners pleaded for teen viewers to do better than their elders.

“With all the injustice and the hatred and everything that’s happened not only in the world but in our country right now, I need for you young people, I need you guys to be educated. I need you to listen. I need you to pay attention,” said Spider-Man: Homecoming actress Zendaya, accepting Best Summer Movie Actress.

Miley Cyruswas to receive the ceremony’s highest honour, the Ulti- mate Choice Award. But she was a last-minute cancellation.

Cyrus later explained her absence, sort of, posting on Instagram, “I created an unrealistic schedule for myself,” then announcing her new single “Younger Now” will be released Friday.

Many of the other biggest names either sent video acceptances ( Bruno Mars, Gal Gadot) or were merely announced ( Beyoncé, Zac Efron, Ariana Grande). One notable exception was Chris Pratt, who accepted his two movie awards, his first such appearance since separating from Anna Farris. Rock band Maroon 5 was honoured with the Decade Award. Other winners included Dwayne Johnson for Moana, Lucy Hale for Pretty Little Liars and Ed Sheeran for Best Male Song.
