Outdoor opera, an ‘impossible’ game show and endless jokes

- CARLY MAGA THEATRE CRITIC

Bandits in the Valley Watch this if: You like contemporary opera and true crime stories.

Never mind the hiking trails, bike paths and the leafy scenery; there’s a new reason to visit Todmorden Mills and the Evergreen Brickworks area every weekend in September.

Tapestry Opera is offering a new opera for free to visitors, but you still have to book tickets.

Bandits in the Valley, with a libretto by playwright and actor Julie Tepperman, travels through the grounds telling a story based on the history of the area, which is closely tied to rum runners and smugglers in the 1860s.

Sept. 2-30 (Saturdays, Sundays), Todmorden Mills, 67 Pottery Rd. Sean Cullen’s Another Nearly Impossible Quiz Watch this if: You’re a fan of trivial pursuits.

Comedian Sean Cullen has such a smarmy charm onstage (we mean that in the best possible way) that it’s not a stretch to imagine him in the role of quiz show host.

His “nearly impossible” quiz panel/ game show returns to Comedy Bar, where he will pit comedians Nug Nahrgang and Juliana Rodrigues, and film critic Richard Crouse against each other for the ultimate title.

Thursday, Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor St. W. Jokes, Guy Watch this if: You like jokes, guy. The Theatre Centre has been ramping up the programming in its café, bar, lobby space — one of the biggest strengths in its new(ish) permanent home in the Carnegie Library.

One of the highlights of this new initiative is the monthly Jokes, Guy lineup of standup comedians.

Hosted by Liza Paul, a very funny performer known for the hit show pomme is french for apple with actor Bahia Watson (who happens to be the interim café manager at the Theatre Centre), the August event features Akosua Amo-Adem, Najla Nubyanluv and Nicholas Reynoldson, fresh from a stint at Just for Laughs where he performed for Kevin Hart’s LOL Network.

Thursday, Theatre Centre, 1115 Queen St. W.
