City honours war dead on Remembrance Day
Roundup of commemorations where Canadians will gather to remember fallen soldiers
Lest we forget.
It’s the time of the year when Canadians will stand at the11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to remember and honour the lives of those who died in the line of wartime duty.
Veterans who served and those who continue to serve will be remembered by the city at many locations across the GTA, including Old City Hall, as well as locations in East York, Etobicoke, Fort York, North York and York.
For those who would like to participate in the commemorations, here is a roundup of the Remembrance Day ceremonies and tributes taking place in Toronto:
City Hall at 10:45 a.m., York Civic Centre and the East York Civic Centre Memorial Gardens at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday
Cross of Sacrifice in Prospect Cemetery at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The Royal Canadian Legion, Earlscourt Branch 65, will be having its 88th Annual Sunrise Service in Prospect Cemetery, at 1450 St. Claire Ave. W.
Remembrance Day Ceremony at Queen’s Park at 10:15 a.m. on Satur- day. The lives of all soldiers will be celebrated by Queen’s Park at the Ontario Veterans’ Memorial at 111 Wellesley St. W.
Remembrance Day Commemoration at Fort York at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday. A tribute will begin at the west gate of Fort York led by uniformed military staff who will make their way to the Avenue Military Cemetery, at 250 Fort York Blvd.
Third annual Remembering the Fallen tribute until sundown on Saturday.
More than 11,800 Canadian flags can be found planted on the front lawn of Manulife’s headquarters at 200 Bloor St. E. to honour the thousands who have died in wars from the South African War to the Afghanistan mission, as well as peacekeeping missions. Manulife says that each flag represents 10 soldiers who have died.
Bagpipers along Yonge Street at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Bagpipers will punctuate Yonge St., from Richmond St. to Shuter St.
Ferndale Baptist Church ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, near 614 Brimley Rd., will be celebrating Black Canadians in uniform during its Sunday morning church service followed by a lunch with attendees.
