Get there/around: I flew United Airlines from Toronto to Guatemala City, with a connection in Houston. We used a mix of buses, planes and helicopters to get around Guatemala and Honduras. Stay: Pretty much everywhere we stayed during our tour was top notch, but nothing came close to Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel near Flores. Aside from the excitement of arriving at the property via helicopter direct from a long day in the jungle at El Mirador, the water- front suites are perched on stilts looking over a lagoon, with a hot tub in a separate sun room offering the best views of the water. Another reason to stay there is the hotel’s owners have one of the best private collections of Mayan artifacts in the country, which can be viewed at request. Waterfront suites start at $425. Do this trip: Bella Guatemala Travel (bellaguatemalatravel.com) offers various tours and the Lost Kingdom of the Mayas tour runs once a year.
